Britany Calley is a graduating senior at Franklin High School. Some of her classmates are moving on to college and some are not, but Calley will be moving on to attend the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado next year on a $400,000 scholarship.

Her mother, Robin Brit, said that instead of wanting to grow up to become a veterinarian or a writer like a lot of young girls do, Calley always dreamed of growing up to become a combat pilot. Brit said her daughter liked the idea of it and the adrenaline rush it gave her.

Calley said it comes from doing gymnastics. "I love the feeling of flying ... I thought I'd take it to the next level."

Not only is Calley an honors student, but she has won regional and state championships for gymnastics many times in both New Hampshire and Florida and at one point she was practicing and competing 30 hours a week.

Calley was invited to join the National Honor Society, but her mother said she just didn't have time for it.

Brit spent an entire year driving Calley and her sister every single day to a gymnastics academy in Portsmouth when the family was living in Hill, not to mention competitions.

Calley has always been very passionate about gymnastics. She started when she was four years old and began competing when she was seven. She said her parents have always been very supportive of her sport and that at one point her dad pushed her to continue.

If it weren't for that, Calley said she might never have gotten into the Air Force Academy. The academy seeks out and recruits athletes and Calley turned out to be just what it wanted.

Calley is passionate, driven, smart and kind. She works hard, plays hard and has many friends. Brit said her daughter is "a good role model... She's just a good kid."

"From the day she won her first gold medal, she never wanted to settle for the silver," Brit said of Calley.

That proves true in going to college too. Calley was recruited to many colleges and universities across the country and accepted to both the University of New Hampshire and the University of Central Florida, but turned them both down because, "None of them really interested me as much as the Air Force."

It was a tough process to get into the academy. Brit said that Calley had to write many essays and letters and get nominated by then U.S. Sen. John Sununu. At the academy her only expense will be for books.

Calley said she is very close with her family, her sister and father in Franklin and her mother in Florida. She applied to UNH and UCF to be close to them, but her passion and desire to fly trumped her desire to stay close to home.

"There's more opportunities for me," she said of choosing the Air Force Academy. "The opportunity to fly was a major deciding point."

Calley has already visited the campus twice and has already made some friends. She said she is a little nervous, especially to take classes in science, math, and engineering, but she said she thinks she will be fine.

"I think I'm more excited than nervous," she said.

Memorial Day Weekend 2009

We had such a great day yesterday. It was very relaxing. We took a ferry boat over to Caladesi Island in Dunedin. Last year, this beach was ranked #1 in America! Yes, even over all of the beaches of Hawaii. Now that we have discovered it, we want to go again and spend the entire day. I hope to take the girls there this summer while they are visiting. Afterward, we went out for a Greek dinner and walked the boardwalk of Clearwater Beach which is always a nice way to cap off the day.

The girls had a great time at prom. Now we are heading into the home stretch before graduation. Britany is feeling a bit low. She is wondering where her childhood went. Even she can't believe how quickly the years have passed and now so much is going to be expected of her as an "adult" and as an Air Force Cadet and college gymnast. Hold on tight Brit!

NH bound..

So, I'm heading to NH for three days: June 3, 4 and 5th; coming home then heading back on the 11th for graduation on the 12th! Whew! Hope is still in school until the 10th, so I don't want to leave her down here until the 10th, etc. I am going to NH the 3-5 because Britany and I have been invited to a dinner hosted by the Air Force Academy's Parent Association in honor of the NH cadets. I cannot miss this since it is not very likely that I will be able to make any trips to the Academy for Parent's weekends at least for awhile. I am looking forward to meeting some of her fellow cadets and meeting the guest speakers from the Academy and hearing first hand about what to expect from her experience there.

Then, back up for the graduation on the 12th. I hope I bring enough Kleenex!

Home...

We had a nice visit in Toronto. It was a bit chilly though. There were a few nice days, but the majority was chilly; some were downright freezing! We had some rain and cloudy days as well. Now, it seems so HOT here to me! I've been turning the AC down more often than I usually do.

You know, I actually missed the puppy. I didn't think that I would. She hasn't been with us for a really long time. But anyway, I missed her and felt soooo guilty for leaving her in a kennel. She seems to be adjusting fine to being back home and seemed happy to see me when I picked her up.

Christopher had a great time, but he was happy to see his Hopey again. It is a good thing she is here or he may have been sad going from all of the attention and activities in Toronto to just he and I in a quiet house again.

It looks like I have a busy schedule coming up in June. Britany wants me to accompany her to a dinner hosted by the Air Force Academy Parents Association in NH on June 4th and then graduation is June 12th. Patrick will be graduating from 8th grade sometime in June as well.

Maybe I shouldn't bother to unpack!

The Cooper Boogie

Family Fun

Wow. Too much fun for words, but I'll try!

I finally made it over to Rob and Ann-Marie's home after about two years! Christopher is doing fine in the car now thankfully, so the trip was not stressful at all. In fact, he slept the majority of the ride back home yesterday. The ride over was easy as I had both of the girls in the car to help out.

The boys hit it off great and enjoyed having a playmate! Cooper is a little doll. It was nice to just relax and enjoy the company of family. Now, we just have to talk Charmaine into moving down!

It was difficult to say good-bye but we all did our best not to send out too many negative thoughts to the universe... ;)

We had a wonderful time and I want to thank Rob and Ann-Marie for all of their hospitality.

My Aunt Betty stopped in for a visit one day and it was great to see her again and catch up! Hopefully we will see her again soon.

Taylor made it over here for a couple of days and it was nice to have her "home" again even if for just a couple of days.

Tomorrow, I'm off to Toronto! Then it looks like a busy June!!
